am | personnel's tip's for interview success
-
Make sure you know who you are meeting for
interview and practice saying their names if they are difficult
to pronounce. Also know where you are going. Try to find the
company before the day of the interview - this is great for
sizing up the parking arrangements or feeling sure of distances
from bus stops. The more knowledge you have, the less flustered
you'll feel.
-
Think carefully about what you are going
to wear - look the part and you will feel it. However, ensure
that you feel comfortable with what you are wearing; a new pair
of shoes can be uncomfortable and a distraction. Present yourself
in a smart, clean and tidy manner.
-
When you are introduced, shake hands and
exude a professional and business-like air. You can never overlook
the importance of a good smile. Equally, try to maintain eye
contact throughout the interview.
-
Interviews are a two-way process - listen
carefully to questions, as your interviewers may try to help
point your answer in the right direction. Pick up on clues;
how technical is the language being used? Try to mirror this
in your answers.
-
When you are asked questions, try your hardest
to avoid 'Yes' or 'No' answers. This is your opportunity to
sell yourself. Be positive. You have got to the interview because
on paper, you match the skills the company are searching for.
Now is the time to shine. Take a breath before you start and
keep the question you've been asked in your mind. Try not to
wander off the point. Wherever possible, respond to questions
using examples from your previous positions to illustrate your
point - this will help prove that you can do the job.
-
Panel interviews are not as bad as they seem.
Once you have got over the initial shock of being greeted by
a sea of faces, it actually gets much easier. As a rule of thumb,
direct your answer back to whomever asked the question. Don't
be concerned if one person doesn't ask anything, just make sure
that you acknowledge them with eye contact and your body language
during your answers.
-
Remember that an interview is an opportunity
for you to ask questions as well. Find out about the company
by checking our their website. It is always helpful to make
a note of at least two questions to raise at the end of your
interview. Asking intelligent and interesting questions will
show the employer you are keen, enthusiastic and the right person
to join their firm.
Top Tips for Writing a C.V. (2007)
Covering Letter
- Always include a covering letter with your CV. It should be
well presented, clearly structured and concise. The letter should
refer to the vacancy and can be used as an introduction to you
and is an opportunity to highlight things that you were prevented
from including in your c.v. such as the vacancy in question,
its requirements and why you are the person for the job.
Curriculum Vitae
- Remember the purpose of your c.v. is to secure you an interview
- your best selling points should be written in a logical manner
in order that information can be easily accessed and quickly
interpreted.
- It should be ordered, readable and pleasing to the eye, with
sections and headings clearly marked. Ensure that all spelling,
grammar & punctuation are correct.
- You need to feel comfortable with your c.v., and information
should be honest and accurate. Remember, it is up to you to
say what you can do and be prepared to back this up in interview
questioning.
- Look at your c.v. and put yourself in the employer’s
shoes, they will not know what you have achieved and cannot
guess what you might omit. Your c.v. therefore needs to stimulate
the reader but also needs to be concise, providing factual information
and providing evidence to back it up.
- Keep personal information to a minimum. You should include
name, street and e-mail address, plus a telephone number.
- Highlight your employment in reverse chronological order (e.g.
last job first). If you have worked in one establishment, break
it down into positions that you have held during your time there.
Provide details on responsibilities, work undertaken and achievements
(bullet points can be useful to lay this out).
- Include a section on education, further training and interests.
Temper this with common sense; a synopsis is better than an
essay. Always include information about languages, courses or
training done. However, try to avoid putting anything under
interests unless it is either relevant to the job (e.g. it highlights
your leadership or organisational skills) or you can talk inspiringly
about the subject.
Helpful Hints
- Remember less is more - try to limit your c.v. to 2 pages
(maximum 3).
- Ensure that your c.v. is completely up to date!
- Try to avoid ‘jargon’ that may not mean anything
to the recruiter.
- Ensure that the name of the recruiting company or the contact
name is spelt correctly.
Remember the recruiter may have just
20 - 30 seconds to look through your c.v. - make sure you do everything
you can to ensure your c.v. ends up in the ‘yes’ pile.
